About the Alliance

The Canadian Gender and Good Governance Alliance – the ‘Alliance’ – is an unprecedented partnership of the leading not-for-profit organizations focused on research, advocacy and education in the areas of governance and gender diversity. The Alliance aims to amplify and coordinate efforts to increase gender parity on boards and in executive positions, and contribute to public policy as an advisor for the governments and regulators. The first joint initiative is the creation of this Directors’ Playbook, which presents a curation of practical tools that organizations can use to achieve gender balance on boards through deliberate action.
 
We believe that enhancing the numbers and impact of women in senior executive positions will provide the pipeline for sustained gender balance on boards. The Alliance is committed to partnering with businesses, investors, governments and regulators in addressing this essential aspect of the ecosystem.

Goals of the Alliance

Our common goal – to enhance the numbers and impact of women on boards and in executive positions – unites us. As the Canadian Gender and Good Governance Alliance, we collaborate to improve practices that lead to better governance and gender balance. Enhancing gender diversity on boards leads to greater variety of thought and leadership styles, better understanding of the end consumer, a wider talent pool and ultimately higher-quality boards. 
 
We present the Alliance as a task force and resource group to businesses, governments, regulators, institutional investors and other interested stakeholders who require assistance in achieving greater board gender diversity. It is our belief that by providing access to the members of this Alliance as intellectual aides and by joining our efforts to improve gender diversity on boards and in the executive pipeline, we will together transform the business landscape in Canada. 

Leadership

Prof. Dr. Beatrix Dart, Co-Chair 
Beatrix is the Executive Director Rotman’s Initiative for Women in Business, focusing on advancing women in management, for which she won the TIAW Global Award in 2010. She was also named “Top 25 Women of Influence” in 2013, and “WXN Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100” in 2016. Further accomplishments include being a current board member at EllisDon, one of Canada’s largest construction companies, and a founding member and country lead of The 30% Club Canada. She also serves on a number of non-profit boards. As Professor of Strategy at Rotman, Beatrix teaches Management Consulting and Strategy, in particular corporate strategy and the development of growth strategies for international companies. She joined the Rotman School of Management in 2000 following a successful career with McKinsey & Co.

Ekta Mendhi, Co-Chair 
Ekta is a corporate and competitive strategy leader, and currently heads the Strategy function for Wealth Management and Commercial Banking at CIBC. She brings deep experience in the Management Consulting and Financial Services industries, spanning prominent Canadian and global multinational firms. In addition to her work with the Alliance, she is Co-Chair of WCM's Women in Leadership network; a member of the 30% Club Canada Steering Committee; a Director on the Board of the Rotman Vision Fund; and the architect of CIBC Wealth Management's 'Advancement through Active Sponsorship' initiative, that promotes and tracks the professional advancement of protégées as a direct result of sponsor efforts. Ekta's specific areas of focus are (a) increasing the numbers and impact of women on corporate boards, and (b) building a pipeline of women ready for senior management and board positions. Ekta has also been featured on the prestigious Investment Industry Association of Canada IIAC Top Under 40 list in 2016 and 2017.
